Class ID: APS001


Title:  AZDPS Unarmed Security Guard Pre-assignment Course (one-time requirement)

Course Details:  This is a one-day class. All training is conducted at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility. Specifics will be emailed to students one week before class date.  Class size is limited to 15 students. The course covers all AZ Department of Public Safety curriculum required to qualify for an AZ unarmed security guard registration certificate. Payment must be made in advance during the registration process.

Cost: $70.00.   Cost includes all paperwork, fingerprints and photographs required for the application process.  Cost DOES NOT include the applicable DPS application and fingerprint processing fees.

Duration: 8 Hours

Prerequisites: TIER 3  

You may not attend this course if you have one or more of the following disqualifiers:


  • If you are under 18 years of age.
  • If you are not a citizen or legal resident who is authorized to seek employment in the United States.
  • If you have ever been convicted of a felony, whether or not your conviction was set aside and your Civil Rights were restored.
  • If you are currently under indictment for a felony.
  • If within the last 5 years preceding your application, you have been convicted of any misdemeanors involving:
    • Personal Violence
    • Misconduct involving a deadly weapon
    • Dishonesty or Fraud
    • Arson
    • Theft
    • Domestic Violence
    • Narcotics
    • Sexual Misconduct.
  • If you are on parole, community supervision or work furlough, on home arrest, on release on any other basis.
  • If you are named in an outstanding arrest warrant
  • If you have been adjudicated mentally incompetent or found to constitute a danger to self or others.
  • If you have a disability, which renders you incapable of performing essential functions of the job.
  • If you have been convicted of acting or attempting to act as a security guard or private investigator without a license if a license is required.
  • You are a registered sex offender.
  • NO LIVE AMMO IS PERMITTED INSIDE THE CLASSROOM AT ANY TIME.

 

Course Objectives:  Completion of the 8-Hour DPS Security Guard class meets the mandatory 8-hour training requirement prior to submitting a security guard license application.

Title:  AZDPS Unarmed Security Guard Pre-assignment Renewal Course (required every two years)

Course Details:  This is a one-day class. All training is conducted at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility. Specifics will be emailed to students one week before class date.  Class size is limited to 15 students. Payment must be made in advance during the registration process.

The course covers all AZ Department of Public Safety curriculum required to renew an AZ unarmed security guard registration certificate.

Title: AZDPS Armed Security Guard Firearms Training Course (one-time requirement)

Course Details: This is a Two (2) day class consisting of two classroom days and ½ day on the range. All training is conducted at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility. Specifics will be emailed to students one week before class date.  Class size is limited to 15 students. Payment must be made in advance during the registration process.

The armed guard certificate is agency specific, so your employing security agency must approve you for the training and schedule you for the class. The course covers all AZ Department of Public Safety curriculum required to qualify for an AZ armed security guard registration certificate.

Cost:  $125.00 (Includes range fees) Cost includes all paperwork, fingerprints and photographs required for the application process.  Cost DOES NOT include the applicable DPS application and fingerprint processing fees.

Duration: 16 Hours

Prerequisites: TIER 3  

Students must have completed AZDPS 8 hour unarmed pre-assignment course and currently possess a valid unarmed security guard registration certificate or a signed training verification form for the pre-assignment course.

You may not attend this course if you have one or more of the following disqualifiers:


  • If you are under 21 years of age.
  • If you are a prohibited possessor as defined in ARS section 13-3101 or as described in 18 USC 922.
  • If you have been convicted of any crime involving domestic violence as defined in ARS section 13-3601.
  • If you were discharged from the armed services of the U.S. under other than honorable conditions.
  • STUDENTS ARE NOT TO BRING LOADED FIREARMS OR AMMUNITION INTO THE CLASS ROOM ENVIRONMENT. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO LOAD THEIR WEAPON UNTIL ORDERED TO DO SO BY THE RANGE SAFETY OFFICER

 

Course Objectives: This 16-hour armed security guard lesson plan is a firearms safety course, designed to teach the novice armed security guard the basics of gun safety, marksmanship, maintenance and familiarization, as well as legal issues related to the use of deadly physical force. It is also intended to provide training on issues likely to be encountered by armed security guards while on duty. This course is not designed to teach security guard fundamentals.

Students must display knowledge and proficiency of deadly force issues by passing the AZDPS written test with a minimum score of 100 percent at the conclusion of the class. This requires a score of at least 70 percent on the initial test. Initial test scores below 70 percent fail the class. Students will be retested on the questions they missed until 100% is achieved.


Students must display shooting proficiency by firing a minimum of fifty (50) live rounds utilizing the AZDPS Armed Security Guard Authorized Course of Fire for qualification and achieving a score of at least 70 percent.

Separately, in order to obtain employment with Advanced Protection Services, LLC, the student must achieve a score of at least 80 percent.


Recommended Equipment: Students must bring the following to class

  • Duty holster (approved by your agency)
  • Two magazines with magazine pouch
  • Duty belt (if you have one)
  • 75 rounds of factory ammo**
  • Eye protection **

Title: AZDPS Armed Security Guard Continuing Firearms Training Course (required annually)

Course Details: This is a One (1) day class consisting of 1/2 classroom day and ½ day on the range. All training is conducted at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility. Specifics will be emailed to students one week before class date.  Class size is limited to 15 students. Payment must be made in advance during the registration process.

The armed guard certificate is agency specific, so your employing security agency must approve you for the training and schedule you for the class. The course covers all AZ Department of Public Safety curriculum required to renew an AZ armed security guard registration certificate.

Title: Level I Unarmed Security Officer Training Certificate

Course Details:

This block of instruction will cover the state mandated core training curriculum [SC Code, 40-18-30(5)], key knowledge and skills, and performance objectives. Payment must be made in advance during the registration process. Instructor includes all paperwork, fingerprints and photographs required for the application process.  fees.


Cost: $125.00.  

Cost DOES NOT include the applicable SLED application and fingerprint processing.

Duration: 4 hour

Level of Performance:

All students must pass a written examination with 100% accuracy.

Prerequisites: TIER 3  

South Carolina unarmed private security officer license requirements:


  • Be at least 18 years old High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a United States citizen or resident alien
  • Mentally competent Have good moral character
  • No drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Must successfully pass a drug test
  • No felony convictions
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Finger print card
  • Submit to criminal background check

Title: Level II, III Armed Security Officer Training Certificate

Course Details:

This block of instruction will cover the state mandated core training curriculum [SC Code, 40-18-30(5)], key knowledge and skills, and performance objectives for private security officers who are to be armed with either a semi-automatic pistol or a revolver. Payment must be made in advance during the registration process. Instructor includes all paperwork, fingerprints and photographs required for the application process. Instructor DOES NOT include the applicable (SLED) application fee.

Title: NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course

Course Details: : This course is at least 8-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate that qualifies for an Arizona Concealed Carry Permit.  Specific directions and other information will be emailed the week prior to the class.

Cost: $100.00 -  Active duty military, veterans, and immediate family members $90.00 ea. (Includes all student materials and range fee).
Registration and payment must be made in advance NLT 7 days prior to class date.


Duration: Minimum 8-hours (includes range time).

Prerequisites: Must be at least 18 years of age and not a prohibited possessor.

Course Objectives: Teach the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

Equipment: Students must bring the following to class:

  • Handgun (revolver or semiautomatic)
  • Ammo magazine
  • 100 rounds of factory ammo
  • Eye protection
  • Hearing protection

POLICIES AND COURSE RESTRICTIONS!


Identity Verification PolicIes:


  • Students must have a current state issued photo ID.
  • Students must provide your full legal name: last, first, and middle.
  • Students must provide the address where you currently live, including street name and number apartment number (if applicable), City, State, and Zip.

Safety Polices:


  • No alcoholic beverages are permitted at the Firearms/Training Facility during hours of operation. Persons impaired to any degree by alcohol or any other substance will not carry, handle, or fire any firearm.
  • The Range Safety Officer or any Firearms Instructor will take the firearm(s) from any suspected impaired person and secure it. The incident will be immediately reported to the Training Unit Supervisor.
  • Persons believed, by the Range Safety Officer or a Firearms Instructor, to be ill or mentally distracted to the point of being a safety concern or a disruption to on-going training will be instructed to leave the facility.
  • Any person ordered to leave the facility by the Range Safety Officer, or any Firearms Instructor shall leave immediately.
  • Live ammo will not be brought into the classroom for any reason.

REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICIES:


NO REFUNDS! Students who fail to attend will receive credit toward a future course.

As a general rule, we do not disclose to anyone personal information about our students or former students. However, to the extent permitted by law and any applicable state Code of Professional Conduct, certain non-public information about you may be disclosed in the following situations: To comply with a validly issued and enforceable subpoena or summons.

Videotaping, filming, or photographing students is prohibited while participating in training activities as it may constitute a disruption in the planned instructional, as well as violate privacy laws which protect the privacy of students.
